Should HD spots be included in the “Most Played Commercials” list?


You may be surprised to hear me say this, but I don’t think it’s fair to call the HD Digital Radio Alliance Radio’s number one national advertiser, as this ranker suggests and the news headlines tend to read.

That’s because, technically, these HD spots are self-promotion. We don’t call NBC its own number one advertiser even though its self-promos probably outnumber any other advertiser’s spots.

The argument regarding whether this HD “opportunity cost” is smart or foolish promotion is a different one, it seems to me (but that’s not what this post is about).

So shouldn’t we take HD off this list?
