Hey Radio, What Happens Next?

I heard a story recently from a Buzzfeed exec. As part of their never-ending experimentation with new platforms - and as part of their desire to play a joke on the boss - they filled the boss's office with goats and hay while the boss was temporarily away at a meeting. What would happen when he came back to his office to see...that?! The whole scene ran on Facebook Live and the metrics, as with all things Buzzfeed, were through the roof. But here's the interesting part of the story: While the goats were grazing around the office all alone views grew and grew and grew. But … [Read more...]

Radio’s Advertising Spending Forecast – 2015 – 2020

There's a new report from one of my favorite media experts, Jack Myers, and it highlights advertising revenue projections for radio and other media from 2015 to 2020 (you can download your own copy here). To summarize: Terrestrial radio (non-digital advertising only) is expected to be essentially flat with 0.6% growth annually. Digital advertising revenue is expected to increase by 18% annually over the next five years. That means digital will rise from 9% of overall ad revenue in 2015 to 19% in 2020. In other words, all the growth in radio ad revenue is likely to come from digital … [Read more...]

Audio is a Feature, Not an Industry

So what does it mean when the radio industry headlines lead with debt-burdened iHeartMedia and this: iHeartMedia Battles Angry Creditors as Bankruptcy Looms. What does it mean when the next headline is about Cumulus, and this quotation: "Q4 and 2015 results dismal as radio's decline shows no signs of stabilization." What does it mean when CBS announces their plan to spin all of their radio assets while at the same time vowing to boost revenue $3.75 Billion by 2020 based on everything except radio: Retransmission fees, OTT, international projects, and more? What does it mean when … [Read more...]

Radio: The BBC Is Trying to Tell You Something

The BBC will reportedly abolish its radio and television divisions. BBC-produced radio and TV will still exist, of course, but they will be reorganized to reflect changes in audience behavior and in media definitions that I and others have been articulating for years. From Tubefilter: [BBC] director-general, Lord Tony Hall, believes an organizational overhaul is necessary as digital media continues to blur the lines between television, radio and online. In a speech before Easter, according to The Telegraph, Hall will unveil a new BBC that is organized “into content and audience-led … [Read more...]
