There are three Holy Grails for satellite radio, in my view:
1. Unique content you can’t get on the radio (in process – there’s more to come, I believe) 2. Portable radios that are as cool as iPods (accomplished just last week, with XM’s announcement at the CES) 3. Auto radios that are standard equipment, not options (pricey or otherwise).
The last of these was accomplished, for one car model anyway, just this week.
Conventional radio makes the mistake of viewing XM and Sirius as their prime competitors. XM and Sirius, however, view ALL MEANS of listening to music, no matter what the source, as their competitors. When you start thinking about your business this way, a whole host of new strategies arise.
Or, in radio’s case, don’t.
