Look what’s in Sony’s new Walkman Phone

It’s called “a radio”:

The W850 also introduces a new service that allows users to record a few seconds of a song, either via the microphone or the built-in FM radio, and then with one click, send that clip to a database that will identify the track and relay information about the song back to the phone.

In other words, radio fans, no more complaints about song ID.

It would be in the best interests of all broadcasters if, en masse, they encouraged mobile phone manufacturers to build radio capability into their units.

Not HD radio capability (since that’s a cognitive leap many manufacturers may not yet feel like making), but the bread-and-butter variety we all earn our livings on here and now.

As I have said before and will say again: People don’t buy a radio, they buy things that contain radios.

Like…phones?
