Randy Michaels and the Meaning of Life

Last week I was honored to be on a panel with several radio luminaries at Canadian Music Week.

The panel was aimed at providing strategies to "stimulate" the radio business, and my particular take was to focus on the critical importance of ideas and their implementation.

In so doing, I invoked the name of one of radio's great idea-makers, Randy Michaels.

Here's my portion of the presentation.  I think you'll like this one.

There was nothing like having Randy come into your market – market #85 at the time – selling Critical Mass Media (well before Jacor/CC had any properties in the market) and having him know by heart every single transmitter site in your market. Absolutely remarkable.

Mark: You comments well delivered with enthusiasm and energy, but for someone who beleives in radio I can’t beleive that you didn’t wear a wireless lavalier mic sending your immedaie comments to the onboard camera boot shoe and then into the mic input of the camera. And furthermore, the camera needs to be placed on a mono pod or tripod – the dancing video is very very distracting. Podcasting is worth doing, why NOT do it well? Remember – video with out great audio – is surveillance. If broadcer-casting is where it’s at, let’s lead the blind into the promised land with the BEST quality – pictures, lighting, stability and GREAT SOUND!

Arnie, if you want to wait for professional video, I suggest you google “canadian music week presentation video” like I did. Then sort for recent. You will find two videos, including mine (as of this writing). And neither is professionally shot.
If we take your advice we will make it zero.
I offer this as a free public service. If you want professional video, it will come at a professional price.

Your comments are spot on. I agree the production quality is weak, but I’m more interested in what you have to say. It doesn’t bother me as much as it might bother others. My concern may seem insignificant. I don’t mean to nit pick. But your reference to “Selector Jockeys” is a bit dated and may cost you a little credibility. At one time, Selector was the “Kleenex” of music scheduling software. In their heyday, the probably had a market share north of 85%. That’s not been the case for quite some time. You were delivering your presentation in Toronto where nearly all of the radio stations now use MusicMaster to schedule their music. Of course, this is totally unrelated to your message. But I just thought I would bring you up to speed on that aspect of the radio business.
