Presenting the “Ed Wood Award for the Worst Radio Station Website”

What's the worst website for a radio station you've ever seen?

I mean something so mind-numbingly bad that it threatens to tear at the very fabric of space/time.

Here's your chance to nominate some candidates.  Just make sure you provide your reasons (i.e., don't assume those reasons are self-evident).

This is not intended as a deep-dive into a bubble-bath of negativity. Rather, it's a learning opportunity.  Sometimes the best way to go right is to see what it means to go terribly wrong.

So what's the worst (and please provide the link)?

The tension is building!  Oscar-schmoscar!  Who will win the Woody?

Nominate by comment below.  If we get some worthy candidates, we'll vote later.  And please don't email me the toxic URL's directly.

Worst ones go to http://www.mibuzzboard.com and http://www.redandnater.com HANDS DOWN!

Those are not station sites, Woody.

Sure it’s a little cluttered, but if you find the “Z-logs” you can see their automation logs, complete with music, imaging and spots.

  • http://www.rttnews.com Ron Rivlin

Glad to see you ran with my Extreme Website Makeover idea. Now which vendor will step up and provide a free makeover for the worst site?

  • http://profile.typepad.com/mramsey1 Mark Ramsey

Yes, Ron sparked this idea. The Ed Wood part is all mine. :-)

How about AM Hip Hop station 1120 WHOG ?
The buttons don’t work right when you click them, the listen live doesn’t work, etc.

I know that mocking low-funded radio stations is a bit cruel, but you think someone would do better than WKJV:
    http://www.wkjv.com/
Images on top of images, links that go nowhere, “Click Here” links that do not click…there’s a lot to work with here.
    Or KJBB:
    http://www.kjbbfm.com/
They don’t even bother with information about the station, but they do have a guestbook on the front page, a list of sister stations, and a number of broken JPEGs.

  • Sam

    http://www.z933.com/
    and equally horrible sister station…
    http://www.957therock.com/body.php
    Yikes.

  • http://www.biggunradio.com/ Christopher Tracy

Christopher from Atlanta says take a look at http://www.biggunradio.com
Not professional. Tacky. Almost never updated. No programming schedule and it’s a variety station! You have to see it for yourself.

  • Phargo Phred

http://www.wday.com Severely bland. For a heritage station Most unrated market stations have better sites than this.

    http://wpkn.org.
Using a WordPress template and a color palette best described as “mud,” the folks at WPKN present a user experience replete with an interminable scrolling feed using a wide variety of font sizes and styles, an empty “Now Playing” box, and a link to their store–featuring yellow-on-yellow text–that offers no escape back to the main page.

Not totally a radio site but one radio folks might visit:
    http://www.nashvillemusicspace.com
    Why?
Built all in Flash. Takes forever to load. You’ve already lost people because it takes so long to load.
    Starts playing video right away.
VEry busy – my eye does not know where to go first.
Navigation – should I click on a picture? Oh I have to mouse over to see what areas I need to click on…..
    Etc…..
    Oh and….
Because it is all in Flash none of it is indexable by a search engine….

It’s sad to note that all three of these stations are owned by Stephen King.
You’d think they could do better given how completely awesome his website generally is for his fans.

  • IMIKEY

Any Clear Channel website. Across all their stations, they are basically formatted the same. Cluttered as hell and loaded with as many ads as their actual radio stations.

  • http://profile.typepad.com/mramsey1 Mark Ramsey

Nope. Generic references like this don’t apply.

  • Glen Livet

    TMI, dudes.
    http://wjib740.com/

  • Peter

    ckvnradio.com
No draw for anyone to come back to it at all. Not interactive. No announcer blogs.

  • CC

    http://y98.com/
All the awesomeness that is a horrible website AND a stupid commercial walk-on video ad.

  • missy_chelle

WOW!!! That is NOT cool. I vote for this one! Where’s the excitment? Why does it look like something from 1990?!

  • http://Www.redandnater.com Nater

I second the votes for aia and xtrain. The only thing either site is missing are flying toasters and a link to explain how you can get a floppy disc to install Prodigy on your Commodore 64.

  • Kenny Geewhiz

Quite possibly the tackiest major market, major operator-owned web site there is: KTWV Los Angeles http://www.947wave.com. Busy, ugly, and where are their priorities when the “send ringtones to your phone” ads are more prominent than the icon for the morning show?

  • http://www.cowboybillsradio.com MICHAEL MANN

    http://www.cowboybillsradio.com/
That website is so bad they even have to solicit money from visitors!
    Imagine that…..

  • http://www.cowboybillsradio.com MICHAEL MANN

    http://www.a1aradio.com/
    Absolutely worthless……

  • http://www.kx96.fm Robbie
  • David

    http://Bamacountry989.com
This is nominated solely for the fact that the owners of this station don’t even care how BAD this looks. for starters the link goes to a SUB-directory of the website, second, it’s a total fustercluck with EVERYTHING on the main page. i’m actually shocked at this compared to the cleaner layout of it’s sister stations.

  • http://jasonrepko.org Jason Repko

    Here it is:
    http://www.radiodurango.com
This is the home site for a company called “Four Corners Broadcasting.” Is this 1997 still or what?
First, your eye goes everywhere, which is a bad thing. Second, you get absolutely NO sense of who the stations are, the areas they represent, what they do, mission, size, scope. Nothing.
Third, there are no faces except a few bizarre and REALLY bad photos of dj’s (or people that dj’s wish they were). Click on links and they go in all sorts of nonsensical directions.
This is a station that represents a relatively small community. There is no sense of community within this site. It’s perhaps the most disjointed site I’ve ever seen. What’s going on? Who are these people? Is this a joke? Need I continue?
This site is an absolute mess.

  • Dan German

Pretty much any radio station in Grand Junction, but especially this.

I was visitor 12345 on that wrab.net. Im a little spooked now.

  • Ron Wilton

This sure looks like a deep-dive into a bubble-bath of negativity to me.

  • http://profile.typepad.com/mramsey1 Mark Ramsey

Well then you don’t know how to learn from mistakes, Ron.
And judging by your repeatedly snarky comments, that doesn’t surprise me a bit.

Ha! And this one says they were the “Winner of the 2009 Air Award
Best Nashville Radio Website!” (in Arial Bold)

  • MUSCLE13

This has to be the worst hands down Mark – The site simply and ONLY identifies The World Famous LIR. But what you get is an ESPN radio simulcast since the World Famous LIR switched its legendary (World Famous) alt rock format years ago! LOL

  • http://www.roswellradio.net Trisha

this site has been up and like this for years…..yikes!

  • Buzz

In N Texas, NOTHING can be more unpleasant than having to hear 103.7 KVIL in Dallas.  So horribly pop-oriented and heavily commercial.  It’s usually blasted in businesses that want a steady turnover.
