The Secret to Successful Streaming

Should you be discouraged that Pandora tops all conventional broadcasters in the online radio rankings?

Or should you be pumped and energized?

I think it's the latter.  And in this short video I explain why.

Note that I'm all for streaming your station.  But I'm really all for streaming much MORE than your station.

  • I assumed that "unique and different" would also be desirable.
Not sure about your Pandora point. Their advertising happens during the stream, not at sign on.
    Thanks George!

Nice message, but the "unique and different" only matters if that's what the consumer wants. Sushi is unique and different, but there's nothing you can do that will get me to eat raw fish.
The other issue, and I thought about this as I watched the Olympics, is that Pandora operates on a different set of rules in terms of monetization. They need frequent sign-ons. That's how they make their money. Because their advertising happens at sign on. On the other hand, broadcasters want TSL with their stream. They want the office worker who signs on, and keeps the channel tuned in all day while they work. The broadcast site probably isn't simulcasting local spots or creating unique spots for their stream. The main revenue comes from the banner ads on the site, and they just want to generate hits. Also broadcaster local streams, at least the ones I know about, don't charge a subscription fee. That may be money left on the table, but it is what it is. I doubt local broadcasters want to get into collecting their listener credit card numbers along with email addresses.
But you're exactly right that these web sites have terrible metrics, and I expect the roof will cave in on that at some point. I've done a lot of comparisons, and I'm shocked at how bad the numbers are. The difference is that they have small but dedicated audiences. They have email addresses and they share them with the advertisers.
