A Peek into Radio’s Digital Future with Triton Media’s Jim Kerr

Where is the radio industry as the digital world transforms the media around us?  And where does radio need to go?

These were just two of the questions I put to Triton Media VP Strategy Jim Kerr this past week.

Triton, of course, is one of the firms at the forefront of the digital revolution in radio.  That puts Jim in the center of the storm (or is it the eye of the hurricane?).

It's a progress report on our path to revolution.

P.S. I'll frame the interviewer better next time.  Fortunately, you see enough of him.

  • I get your point - and your joke :-)
The answer is to show by doing. In whatever way you can.
Much of what needs to be done requires few resources and no permission.

This interview is a great high-level overview urging radio management to recognize the value in truly investing in digital strategy BUT, besides sharing as many success stories and resources (such as your blog) with the 'suits' making the strategy and resource decisions - how can a person instigate this change at the ground level?
As an employee, it's an uphill battle to continue to fight for an increased focus on digital strategy when, afterall, we are in the "radio business" :)
  • Sometimes the simplest ideas are the best.
  • When Jim talks about incentives for staff, the simplest way to incent employees is profit sharing: 10% of pre-tax profits to be spread among all non-commissioned employees, inclusive of a salary allowance for ownership.
Having walked the talk on this, it works beautifully - costs as a percentage of revenue go down and revenue climbs faster.
That means an owner can pay himself as much as he wants but only an industry standard salary figure for each owner's job is deducted to figure in the profit sharing equation.
