“Why Local Radio is No Longer Local”

Here's a piece I was interviewed for in a local San Diego paper, The Reader, that is a fairly well-balanced take on the local/non-local issue.

Check it out.

Interesting article. Those of us who've been around for more than 30 years wonder how these folks would deal with ABC radio, who found success with Top 40 in NYC and forced it on their O&s around the country. Same with Westinghouse, who had success with all-news, and copy-catted its format on all their O&Os. RKO did the same thing. Clear Channel isn't new, and it's not even the worst example. But I find that people hate Clear Channel as a company. Yet they seem to like certain stations or personalities on CC stations. It all sounds like complaining for the sake of complaining to me.
  • maMark after reading the article, I kept reading the comments from their regular readers.
From the comments, I’m again surprised or I guess not surprised at the anger directed towards radio and the Mcradio operators. Enough people felt passionate enough about radio’s stale state to vent their negative feelings and make be known they’ve found better alternatives. In a time when more talented people are being cut from the team and content is being cheapened again, I have to wonder when will radio finally hit bottom, when will the industry stop destroying itself?
I’m part of the anti-Iboc crowd, in part because iBiquity’s hybrid system has many flaws.
Mostly though I feel broadcasters have failed to offer programming praiseworthy of their new digital toys. It’s like the entire industry has a nasty cancer that nobody will take responsibility for and begin fixing the problems. And meanwhile, back at the ranch, the bootlickers are still walking around with their rose colored glasses on.
    I don’t get it?
