“Local media sites have a significant lead over portals”

From the Center for Media Research:

According to a new report by the Online Publishers Association, local media sites hold a distinct advantage when it comes to delivering results for advertisers. The study finds that consumers trust advertising on local newspaper, magazine and television Websites, and are very likely to take action after viewing ads on these sites.

Newspapers rank first, with 46% of consumers taking action, including making a purchase, going to a store, conducting research, after viewing a local ad, as compared to 37% of consumers acting after viewing a local ad on a portal.

Local media sites have a significant lead over portals.

One thing amazes me about this report: “Radio” evidently doesn’t even make the grade as a local medium.

But if we leave that snub aside, the point remains:

There’s an online advantage to being local.

I repeat: There’s an online advantage to being local.

Now, are you building a “local media site” or a radio station brand extension?

Hmmmm?

  • Richard: No it probably has something to do with international royalty rates. Same thing happened to Pandora.
  • Is this why Kiis FM doesn't stream outside of the US anymore? I just wrote my theory on it.

Actually George, WTOP does even better than you know. More than 200,000 monthly uniques! It's not a radio site, a recognized brand yes, but it is the total depth of content experience including news, weather, video display - most radio sites are branded to their on air presentation format or limit their news content - this is where the investment must take place to get the ROI - otherwise all user and monetary growth will stagnate.

The one thing local newspaper, magazine, and TV have over radio is NEWS. Quite often, people will go to those sites for news and information. Most local radio stations don't have much original local news on their sites. When they do, it can lead to great results.
In Washington, WTOP's web site is one of the most popular local information sites. It beats out all other stations in town. Alexa gives it a traffic rank of 17,109, beating out all other local media, including TV. WJLA-TV gets a rank of 38,378. WRC-TV is 18,395. That's pretty impressive. Against local NPR stations, WAMU ranks 75,727 and WETA ranks 120,203. That's a radio-TV site.
Sure the Washington Post ranks 330. I dare say they are not a typical local newspaper.
So there's a difference between content and content. The one thing online has in common with broadcast is people don't tune in for the commercials.
  • Yes, we are building a "local media site" ad channel, even though the reach is national.
"Location based" as an internet and mobile enabled trend is as strong a tool for the future of advertising as is "on-demand" as a key trend for consumers.
