Municipal Wi-Fi? Not just yet.

USA Today reports that several cities are shutting down their plans for municipal free or cheap city-wide Wi-Fi.

The reasons are cost and complexity.

In the long run, of course, there’s no doubt that the Internet will be everywhere we need it – which is everywhere. Nor is there any doubt that it will reach into our cars sooner rather than later.

Still, the threat posed by these municipal programs to the radio industry – namely: A world where folks can stream any online station anywhere in town instead of and in addition to your station – that threat has receded somewhat into the future, it seems.

Will other solutions rush in to fill the gap?

Eventually.

Consumers will demand it.
